A Catholic Grammar School Morality
A Catholic Grammar School Morality
Morality is one of the clearest examples of life's great uncertainties. What is it, really and how do we learn it? What happens when there is no belief in a loving and benevolent God? What happens when there is no shared set of commandments, values, or spiritual truths guiding our daily lives? What happens when there is no divinely inspired moral compass steering us away from evil and toward the good?
And what happens when all we're left with is the latest version of secular ethics if it even offers any real direction at all?
This short story is my answer. It shares how I first came to understand morality, how I was shaped by the loving and steady lessons of Christian teaching, and how those lessons brought me to certainty. Because when there is no belief in God in the home, in schools, in the media and when no belief is passed down to our children they will inevitably absorb something else. They will learn the shifting secular ethic of the moment, the harsh ethic of the streets, or worst of all, no ethic at all.
